Climate Change and Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in Virginia

چکیده

Submerged aquatic vegetation or “SAV” includes both flowering and non-flowering plants that grow completely underwater. In the Chesapeake Bay region, the term “SAV” usually refers to various rooted aquatic angiosperms or “underwater grasses” found growing in shallow areas ranging from high salinity to freshwater tidal environments. Approximately 20 species are commonly found throughout Chesapeake Bay and Eastern Shore coastal bays.

Mixing Layers and Coherent Structures in Vegetated Aquatic Flows

Submerged aquatic vegetation can dramatically alter the drag, turbulence and diffusivity characteristics of flow in aquatic systems. As a result, the diffusion and advection of contaminants and particulates are greatly influenced. However, modeling efforts generally treat submerged vegetation merely as a source of drag. This study explores the idea that flow through submerged aquatic vegetation...

Twenty-First Century Climate Change and Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in a Temperate Estuary: The Case of Chesapeake Bay

Introduction: The Chesapeake Bay was once renowned for expansive meadows of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). However, only 10% of the original meadows survive. Future restoration efforts will be complicated by accelerating climate change, including physiological stressors such as a predicted mean temperature increase of 2–6°C and a 50–160% increase in CO2 concentrations. Outcomes: As the Che...

Impact of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation on Radiative Transfer and Hyperspectral Remote Sensing in Optically Shallow Waters: Continued Analysis of CoBOP Data

The goals of this study are to develop models of radiative transfer for optically shallow waters with benthic substrates colonized by submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). The models will enable prediction of upward spectral radiation from the seafloor, thereby permitting (i) the use of optical remote sensing to retrieve bathymetry, (ii) the search for submerged objects of anthropogenic origin an...

Comparison of Manual Mapping and Automated Object-Based Image Analysis of Non-Submerged Aquatic Vegetation from Very-High-Resolution UAS Images

Aquatic vegetation has important ecological and regulatory functions and should be monitored in order to detect ecosystem changes. Field data collection is often costly and time-consuming; remote sensing with unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) provides aerial images with sub-decimetre resolution and offers a potential data source for vegetation mapping. In a manual mapping approach, UAS true-colo...
